Goal-scoring sensation Kylian Mbappé’s knee injury is causing growing concern at both Real Madrid CF and the France national football team.
The captain of the French national team, Kylian Mbappé, was in Paris on Monday receiving treatment for his knee injury. However, surgery is not being planned, sources close to the football star told AFP.
Mbappé was in Paris accompanied by members of Real Madrid’s medical staff.
“In agreement with the club, Mbappé will undergo further examinations on his knee. The aim is to arrange the best possible follow-up treatment and prepare his return to the pitch. Surgery is not currently being planned,” said a statement from the forward’s close circle.
Mbappé has been suffering from an injury to the lateral ligament of his left knee since late 2025. He missed last week’s second leg of the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League against SL Benfica due to ongoing knee pain in training.
His representatives emphasized that there are no disagreements between the club and the French national team regarding the treatment required for the player, whom France is desperate to have fully fit for the upcoming World Cup.
“It’s not a matter of days; the recovery will take a bit longer, but I can’t say exactly how long. Hopefully not too long,” Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa told Movistar at the end of last week.
Mbappé has scored 38 goals in 33 matches this season. It remains uncertain whether he will be able to play in the Champions League round of 16 against Manchester City FC. The first leg will be played on March 11 and the second on March 17.
The French national team will play two friendly matches in the United States: against Brazil in Boston on March 26 and against Colombia in Washington on March 29. France’s opening World Cup match is on June 16 against Senegal.
