The Milano–Cortina Olympics have only just concluded, but the NHL has quickly returned to full speed. Following the long break, attention has shifted back to both the playoff race and the trade market — and several Finnish players have emerged in trade discussions.
Potential moves could also impact Finland’s roster for the upcoming IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, which begins on May 15. Whether players become available for the tournament may depend heavily on where they finish the NHL season.
Rasmus Ristolainen Could Be on the Move
One of the most likely trade candidates is defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Ristolainen impressed at the Olympics, boosting his value on the international stage. He has one year remaining on his contract with a $5.1 million cap hit.
With the Flyers in the midst of a retooling phase, moving a veteran right-shot defenseman could make sense. His physical style and experience would likely appeal to teams looking to strengthen their blue line ahead of the playoffs.
Matias Maccelli Attracting Contenders
Forward Matias Maccelli, currently with the Toronto Maple Leafs, is another intriguing name.
After transferring in the summer from Utah Mammoth, Maccelli has been part of a disappointing season in Toronto. However, the creative playmaker could provide valuable secondary scoring and puck distribution for a Stanley Cup contender, especially in a second- or third-line role.
The Turku-born forward carries a $3.425 million cap hit and will be a restricted free agent (RFA) this summer, making him a relatively safe and controllable acquisition for interested teams.
Erik Haula a Potential Rental Option
Erik Haula of the Nashville Predators is also mentioned in trade speculation.
Haula’s contract ($3.15 million cap hit) expires this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent (UFA). His versatility — capable of playing center or wing and contributing on special teams — makes him a valuable depth option for playoff-bound teams.
If the Predators fall short of postseason contention, management could be willing to move expiring contracts to strengthen the organization’s future.
Impact on Team Finland?
The IIHF World Championship begins on May 15 in Switzerland. If these Finnish players are traded to playoff-bound teams, their availability for the national team could change significantly.
In other words, NHL trade deadline decisions won’t only shape the Stanley Cup race — they could also influence the composition of Finland’s World Championship roster this spring.
