Markus Nutivaara
Finnish defenseman Markus Nutivaara is reportedly heading to Germany, as rumors link him with a move to DEL side Kölner Haie.
According to the Sharkbite podcast, the Cologne-based club has secured the services of the 29-year-old blueliner from Oulun Kärpät. The team, coached by Finnish bench boss Kari Jalonen, had also been rumored to pursue fellow Finnish defenseman Jani Hakanpää, but that attempt reportedly fell through.
Nutivaara has appeared in 35 games for Kärpät this season, recording 7 goals and 9 assists for 16 points. He has played a significant role on the blue line, providing mobility and puck-moving ability throughout the campaign.
His recent career path has been anything but straightforward. Nutivaara previously played in the NHL and appeared in one game for the Florida Panthers during the 2021–22 season before returning to Finland. Persistent hip issues forced him to step away from the game at one point, and he underwent hip replacement surgery just over a year ago. The procedure ultimately enabled him to make a remarkable comeback to professional hockey.
If the move is finalized, Nutivaara would bring experience and offensive upside to Kölner Haie as they prepare for the decisive stretch of the season. For the player himself, the transfer would mark a fresh chapter in Central Europe after a challenging period defined by injury and recovery.
