The San Jose Sharks have secured the future of one of their newest forwards, signing Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract extension worth $28.75 million, carrying an average annual value of $5.75 million. The announcement was made Wednesday by Sharks General Manager Mike Grier.
Sharks Commit to Sherwood’s Role in the Future
Grier emphasized that Sherwood fits perfectly into the team’s long-term vision as San Jose continues building its roster.
“We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building,” Grier said. “The ingredients he brings to our line-up on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skillsets of his teammates and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come.”
The extension signals the organization’s confidence in Sherwood’s physical style and scoring ability as key elements of the Sharks’ evolving lineup.
Immediate Impact in San Jose
Sherwood, 30, joined the Sharks on Jan. 19, 2026, after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for prospect Cole Clayton and second-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027.
Despite his short time with the club, Sherwood has already made an impact. In five games with San Jose this season, he has recorded two points (one goal, one assist). His most notable moment came on March 3, when he scored the game-winning goal against the Montreal Canadiens.
Since making his Sharks debut on Feb. 4 against the Colorado Avalanche, Sherwood has led the team in hits with 28. He also delivered a team-best nine hits in a March 1 matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, highlighting the physical presence he brings to the lineup.
Strong Season Before the Trade
Prior to arriving in San Jose, Sherwood was enjoying a productive season with Vancouver. In 44 games with the Canucks, he tallied 23 points, including 17 goals and six assists.
At the time of his trade, Sherwood led Vancouver in goals, ranked third in total points, and was second in the NHL with 210 hits. His season also featured two hat tricks—one on Oct. 30 in St. Louis and another on Dec. 19 against the New York Islanders.
During a seven-game stretch from Nov. 8 to Nov. 20, Sherwood recorded three goals and four assists, producing two separate three-game point streaks.
He currently has three consecutive 10-goal seasons and sits just two goals shy of matching his career-high mark of 19 goals from the previous season.
Veteran Experience Across the NHL
Over his NHL career, Sherwood has appeared in 314 games with the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, and San Jose Sharks. During that span, he has accumulated 123 points, including 61 goals and 62 assists.
A Productive AHL Career
Before becoming an NHL regular, Sherwood built an impressive résumé in the American Hockey League. Across 186 AHL games with the San Diego Gulls, Colorado Eagles, and Milwaukee Admirals, he posted 172 points (92 goals, 80 assists).
His standout season came in 2021–22 with the Colorado Eagles, when he recorded 75 points (36 goals, 39 assists) in 57 games and earned a spot on the AHL Second All-Star Team.
From College Hockey to the NHL
Sherwood’s path to the NHL included three seasons at Miami University (Ohio), where he played 106 games and recorded 86 points (34 goals, 52 assists). His best collegiate season came in 2016–17 when he produced 38 points.
Before college, he spent two seasons with the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League.
The six-foot, 194-pound forward from Columbus, Ohio was originally signed by the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent on March 20, 2018.
With his new contract extension in place, Sherwood is now set to remain an important part of San Jose’s lineup for years to come.
