Florida Panthers GM Bill Zito admits that the upcoming week will define the franchise’s direction ahead of the NHL trade deadline — and potentially its hopes of capturing a third consecutive Stanley Cup title.
Florida returned from the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics break with a home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but suffered a setback Friday when the Buffalo Sabres earned a 3–2 road victory over the Panthers. After a day off, Florida will visit the New York Islanders on Sunday, kicking off a four-game road trip.
“This is clearly a very important week,” Zito told NHL.com.
“After the week, the answers may be easy. Or we may be facing some very difficult decisions — I don’t know. I’ll be watching every game closely,” Zito continued.
The Panthers (29-25-3) sit eight points behind the Boston Bruins, who currently hold the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The loss to Buffalo only increased the pressure as the trade deadline approaches.
Six Potential Unrestricted Free Agents
Following the season, six Panthers players could become unrestricted free agents: forwards A.J. Greer, Cole Schwindt and Luke Kunin, defenseman Uvis Balinskis, and goaltenders Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov.
The situation forces management to evaluate whether to strengthen the roster for another championship push or create flexibility for the future.
A Radical Option Involving Barkov?
One possible — but drastic — solution would be to place captain Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve due to his knee injury. Doing so would create valuable salary cap space ahead of the trade deadline.
However, such a move would also prevent Barkov from playing in the playoffs, should Florida qualify.
“There are countless possible scenarios,” Zito said.
“We have to be ready to make decisions based on the facts that come in front of us. And that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
The upcoming games — particularly the start of the road trip — could determine whether Florida aggressively pursues reinforcements for another title run or begins shifting its focus toward the future.
