At just 11 years old, Robin Räikkönen has already shown his skills behind the wheel in karting. Now, however, he has had the chance to try a more traditional Finnish form of motorsport – rallying.
The Räikkönen family visited Finland this week, where the youngest generation of the racing family received proper instruction. Present at his rally test was four-time world rally champion Tommi Mäkinen, a close friend of the Räikkönen family.
Räikkönen got to drive a Fiat Abarth S2000 on an ice track – the same type of car his father Kimi drove in his first rally events back in 2009. Robin Räikkönen shared videos of his driving on Instagram. Apparently, sitting in the co-driver’s seat with a camera in hand was his father, the 2007 Formula 1 World Champion.
In addition, the young driver got to experience a ride in a full-fledged Toyota Yaris WRC car. The car was the 2019 championship-winning machine driven by Ott Tänak. Behind the wheel was Tommi Mäkinen, who retained a couple of top-level WRC cars from his time as Toyota team principal.
