The United States women’s national ice hockey team has claimed Olympic gold after a dramatic 2–1 overtime victory in the women’s ice hockey final. In a fiercely contested matchup filled with penalties, momentum swings, and late-game heroics, Team USA once again proved its championship pedigree on the world’s biggest stage.
Scoreless but Tense Opening Period
The first period ended 0–0, but it was anything but uneventful. The United States faced early adversity, taking a bench minor for too many players on the ice at 5:33. Later in the period, Dunne J. was penalized for tripping at 15:05, and Shelton E. was called for hooking at 19:45. Despite the penalties, both teams’ penalty-kill units stood strong, keeping the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
Short-Handed Strike Shifts Momentum
The deadlock was broken early in the second period. At 00:54, O’Neill K. scored a short-handed goal to give the opposition a 1–0 lead. Assisted by Stacey L. and Fast R., the goal stunned the American side and forced them to chase the game.
Team USA pressed hard throughout the remainder of the period, generating chances but unable to find the equalizer heading into the final frame.
Third-Period Comeback
The Americans continued to battle in the third period. Curl B. was sent to the penalty box at 13:37 for boarding, adding to the physical intensity of the contest.
With time running out, the breakthrough finally came. At 17:56, captain Hilary Knight delivered the equalizing goal, assisted by Edwards L. and Megan Keller. The late tally electrified the crowd and sent the game into overtime tied 1–1.
Overtime Glory
In sudden-death overtime, the tension was palpable. Just over four minutes into the extra period, at 04:07, Megan Keller found the back of the net for the golden goal. The play was set up beautifully by Taylor Heise, sealing a 2–1 victory and sparking jubilant celebrations on the ice.
Golden Finish
The overtime winner capped off a resilient performance from Team USA, who overcame penalties and a second-period deficit to reclaim Olympic supremacy. With veteran leadership, clutch scoring, and relentless determination, the Americans once again demonstrated why they remain a powerhouse in international women’s hockey.
Olympic gold belongs to the United States.
