Top four teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals

At the IIHF World Championship 2026, the top four teams from each preliminary group advance to the quarterfinals. With 16 teams divided into two groups of eight, this structure ensures that half of the participating nations move on to the knockout stage.

After the round-robin format is completed within Group A and Group B, teams are ranked based on total points earned during their seven group-stage games. The four highest-ranked teams in each group qualify for the playoffs, while the remaining teams are eliminated from medal contention.

The quarterfinal matchups are typically cross-group pairings. The first-place team in Group A faces the fourth-place team in Group B, and the second-place team in Group A plays the third-place team in Group B. The same format applies in reverse for Group B, creating balanced and competitive matchups.

From the quarterfinals onward, the tournament follows a single-elimination format. Winners advance to the semifinals, and the semifinal winners compete in the gold medal game. The losing semifinal teams play for the bronze medal.

This system rewards consistent performance during the group stage while ensuring that the knockout rounds feature the strongest teams in the tournament.
