Basketball is a team sport played between two teams of five players. The objective is to score points by shooting the ball through the opponent’s hoop while preventing the opposing team from scoring. It is one of the most popular sports globally, both at professional and amateur levels.
The sport is governed internationally by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
History
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States. The game was initially created as an indoor winter activity.
The sport rapidly expanded across North America and internationally. Professional leagues developed in the early 20th century, with the National Basketball Association (NBA) being established in 1946 (as the Basketball Association of America before merging with the National Basketball League in 1949).
Basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936 for men and in 1976 for women.
Rules and Gameplay
A standard basketball game consists of four quarters. Under FIBA rules, each quarter lasts 10 minutes; under NBA rules, quarters last 12 minutes.
Key rules include:
- Five players per team on the court
- 24-second shot clock (time limit to attempt a shot)
- Points system:
- 2 points for field goals inside the three-point line
- 3 points for field goals beyond the three-point line
- 1 point for free throws
- Dribbling required while moving with the ball
- Personal and team fouls leading to free throws or possession changes
If the score is tied at the end of regulation, overtime periods are played.
Format and Qualification System
Basketball competitions vary depending on whether they are domestic leagues, continental tournaments, or international championships.
League Format
Professional and domestic leagues typically use a regular season followed by playoffs. Teams compete in a round-robin schedule during the regular season. Standings are determined by win–loss records.
Top teams advance to a postseason playoff tournament, usually structured as a best-of series format (e.g., best-of-seven).
Tournament Format
International competitions often combine group stages and knockout rounds. Teams are divided into groups, play round-robin matches, and the top teams advance to single-elimination stages.
Qualification System
Domestic Leagues
Clubs qualify for top divisions through promotion and relegation systems (common in Europe and other regions) or through franchise membership (as in the NBA).
Continental Competitions
Clubs qualify based on domestic league performance and national federation rankings.
International Tournaments
National teams qualify through continental qualifying tournaments organized by FIBA regional zones (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania). Host nations may receive automatic qualification. Olympic qualification involves regional tournaments and FIBA World Cup results.
Major International Competitions
FIBA Basketball World Cup
Held every four years and considered the premier international competition for national teams.
