Flavio Cobolli and Frances Tiafoe will meet for the third time in their careers when they battle for the title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco on Saturday night.

Tiafoe has won both of their previous meetings:

• 6-4, 6-2 at the 2024 Delray Beach tournament
• 6-1, 6-4 at the 2025 Washington ATP 500

The American clearly holds the psychological edge heading into this final.

Road to the Final

Both players took the scenic route to the championship match — something that is almost tradition in Acapulco. The tournament is known for long, physically demanding matches played in extreme humidity that often stretch late into the night.

Tiafoe showed tremendous resilience throughout the week. He saved two match points against Aleksandar Kovacevic in the second round and came back from a set and a break down to defeat Brandon Nakashima in the semifinals. Earlier in the tournament, he recorded convincing wins over Nuno Borges and Mattia Bellucci.

Cobolli also endured a tough semifinal battle, outlasting Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 after trailing 3-1 in the deciding set. His week started strong with straight-set victories over Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, Dalibor Svrcina, and Yibing Wu.

Match Analysis

Although Tiafoe’s semifinal ended later, Cobolli was also forced to dig deep physically. The Italian does not appear to hold a significant fitness advantage heading into the final.

While Cobolli has improved over the past two weeks, his overall 2026 season remains underwhelming. He has yet to defeat a player ranked inside the top 66 this year.

Tiafoe, currently ranked No. 28, has proven he can handle high-pressure situations and extreme conditions in Acapulco. His experience, head-to-head dominance, and clutch performances give him the edge.
